Ashen stands tall as England dominate opening day
Opener Ashen Silva hit a painstaking 66 but James Anderson and Monty Panesar took nine wickets between them as England took control of day one of the three-day warm-up match against a Sri Lanka Cricket President’s XI at the R. Premadasa International Stadium, (RIPS) on Thursday.
The hosts were bowled out for 169 runs without much sweat for the Englishmen.
Silva looked confident against a Test class attack and batted four hours for his 66, hitting eight boundaries. The left-hander was selective in his stroke play before being caught behind off a beautiful delivery from Steven Finn, just before tea.
Silva and Sachithra Serasinghe added another valuable 65 runs for the fifth wicket before Panesar took control of the situation to claim five wickets in 55 balls. The left-arm spinner extracted a lot of support from the surface while Anderson and Finn created more bounce with pace.
SLC President's XI had a dreadful start as they lost two wickets for 11 runs inside 10 overs before Ashen and Roshen Silva put on 54 runs for the second wicket before lunch.
Anderson once again made a good start to the series with 4 for 19 off 11 overs.
