The newly constructed 'Randiya Uyana' mega housing scheme in Henamulla, Colombo which consist of 1137 housing units was ceremonially declared open by His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday evening (18th Nov) at a function held at the housing premises. The event coincided with the 69th birthday celebration and the anniversary of the second term in office of the President.

Secretary, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the great icon behind the urban development programme was also present at the occasion. Chairperson of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) Mr. Nimal Perera delivered the welcome address at the outset of the ceremony.

The mega event was inaugurated unveiling the plaque and cutting the ribbon by the Chief Guest. During the session deeds of the housing units were also handed over to its new owners by the President. The programme replete with harmonious displays of veteran artists added an extra elegant and excitement to the gathering throughout the celebratory night.

Addressing the gathering President Rajapaksa went on to say that, it is extremely happy to see the cheerful faces of these children who had been immensely benefited with this priceless initiative. It has bestowed them a social value too. He said.

Further he also mentioned that, we never considered the partial political parties of these people when providing such facilities. Along with the transformation of capital city into a showcase modern city, its dwellers also need be changed accordingly. This visionary measure has set-off with a view to eliminate poverty and boost livelihood while producing more career opportunities for younger generation in the time to come. He also said.

The new scheme also has been constructed akin-to other housing schemes comprising of all basic amenities. The whole project is carried out under the close supervision of the Secretary Defence conforming to high-quality and safety standards. According to the schedule, over 5000 housing units will be completed and will be handed over to squatter dwelling families before the end of this year.

Each 450 square feet housing unit consists of living area, two bed rooms, pantry and a balcony with all amenities including proper sanitary facilities built at a cost of over Rs. 8 million. In addition elevators, spacious car parking facilities, community halls and public convenience places are some of the other facilities here. Simultaneously to the housing project measures were taken to develop the adjacent road network in order to create easy access to the housing scheme.

Religious Dignitaries, Ministers, Parliamentarians, Provincial Ministers, Governors, Chief of Defence Staff, Tri-Forces Commanders, Director General of Urban Development Authority (UDA), Defence Ministry and UDA officials and a large gathering of people in area including beneficiaries graced the landmark event.
